Pediatric Speech Therapy for Echolalia in Katy, TX

Does your child repeat a question instead of answering it? Do they echo your words during conversations or repeat the same phrases in different situations? These may be signs of echolalia, where your child uses language they’ve heard before rather than their own words.

At Davies Institute, our pediatric speech therapists help your child develop the language skills they need to express their own thoughts, feelings, and needs more independently.

What Is Echolalia?

If your child uses echolalia, they may communicate by repeating words, phrases, or sentences they’ve heard from other people, shows, songs, or videos rather than forming a response in their own words.

How and when your child repeats language may vary:

  • Immediate echolalia: Repeating words or phrases right after hearing them
  • Delayed echolalia: Using language heard hours, days, or weeks earlier, such as a line from a favorite show
  • Unmitigated echolalia: Repeating the original words exactly, sometimes with the same rhythm or tone
  • Mitigated echolalia: Changing part of a familiar phrase to fit a new situation, such as saying “Time to go to school” after hearing “Time to go home”

Echolalia is common among children with autism and may also occur with other developmental or language differences.

Signs Your Child May Use Echolalia

A child who uses echolalia may:

  • Repeat a question rather than provide an answer
  • Use the same phrase in several different situations
  • Have difficulty changing familiar phrases to express a new idea
  • Rely on repeated language more often than their own words or sentences
  • Become upset when others do not understand what they mean when they use a repeated phrase

How Speech Therapy Helps Children Who Use Echolalia

At Davies Institute for Speech and Hearing, our speech therapists begin by learning when your child uses repeated language and what they may be trying to communicate. We then use your child’s interests, play, and everyday interactions to build a therapy plan that helps them:

  • Connect repeated phrases with their meaning
  • Use language to request, answer, comment, and share ideas
  • Adapt familiar phrases to different people and situations
  • Build new words and more flexible sentences
  • Understand questions and respond in ways others can follow
  • Participate more comfortably in conversations and daily routines

We also give you practical ways to support your child’s language development at home so they can continue making progress between sessions.
